The Equestrian Outreach Scheme
The Equine Industry used to train students as working pupils who financed themselves, then came the equine courses at Agricultural Colleges. However, many people would still like to train on a professional or local yard. Coleg Gwent operates a successful scheme, where centres become a classroom of the college. In other words the college delivers training on the yards just as they would on college premises, so the college is going out to the yards as opposed to the students coming into the college. Students can enrol on full or part time college courses and receive their training at Talygarn. Students can go to Coleg Gwents Usk Equine Campus to use the facilities at any convenient time and are entitled to exactly the same support and services as a student on the main campus.
The British Horse Society administers an examination system designed to meet the requirements of the riding instructor, yard management, riding holiday sector and those wishing to further their knowledge in riding, stable management and horse care.
Talygarn offers college courses for the following qualifications. All training needs are met at Talygarn and the exams are taken at an approved exam centre. Students receive the full entitlement of any college student. Student cards are available for full time students. Courses can be paid for or there is a work for training option. BHS Courses are full time over 3 days or part time over 1 day. Students must be 16yrs or over.
