Equestrian Vaulting
Vaulting can be desribed as gymnastics on the back of a moving horse being worked on a circle under the control of a lunger. it incorporates beauty and brilliance, power and strength, elegance and precision all in harmony with the horse.
During our Talygarn Summer Open day 2011 I put together a vaulting display if you didn't see it on the day please view the video below.
Over the last year myself and Jennifer have attended training sessions with the British Vaulting Association and are now BVA Level 1 coaches
They will include
- Warm up and stretching exercises to improve fitness and core strength
- Practise position, balance, compulsory and freestyle moves on a vaulting barrel
- Practise using a horse and vaulting roller
Requirements
- Hard hats are not worn during vaulting as they impede balance and may catch on equipment Although small chlidren may wear hats for taster sessions.
- Soft shoes, plimsoll type or old socks, not trainers, hard soled shoes or wellies (please bring with you do not wear as it may be wet and muddy outside)
- Stretchy type clothing ie leggings/jogging bottoms t shirts. no jewellry, hoodies may be worn to keep warm but cannot be worn for vaulting
- Drinking water or juice but no fizzy drinks
Vaulting is suitable for the complete non rider, for those that have a dance or gymnastics background or anyone who may want to have a go. Vaulters need to be fairly fit and athletic in build boys and girls welcome from 4years of age up
As with all equestrian sport there is a risk of accidents occuring. Every possible care will be taken to ensure safety. Vaulters also require physical contact in order to correct positions and to engage in certain moves.
Vaulting involves the use of a horse and a barrel, Our horses have received suitable training and are both very quiet in nature and used to people hanging off them and jumping on them from all directions. Having said that they are animals with a mind of their own and the barrel is quite high off the ground. Therefore
- Vaulters must listen to their coaches at all times
- No misbehaviour will be tolerated
